This route follows the Ili River valley into the steppe. The destination is a wooden-and-stone fortress called 'Turkestan,' built in 2004 as a set for the film 'Nomad.' It was never taken down. The walls, watchtowers, and medieval houses are all still there, sitting in empty steppe with the Ili River nearby. The ride out is fast — open dirt trails with room to push the speed. Good photo spot. The fortress and the surrounding hills are fun to ride around. On the way back, the steppe opens up for a full-throttle return.
Helmet, balaclava, body armor with arm protection, knee pads (worn over your pants), jersey, and gloves.
Water, windbreaker jacket (depending on weather), thick pants, and comfortable closed-toe shoes.

"There's a full-size medieval fortress in the middle of nowhere, built for a film. Walls, watchtowers, the works. You ride across empty steppe for an hour, then it just appears. Felt like a video game."
Ержан М."Hot desert riding with historical stops. The Ili riverbank sections are gorgeous. Bring extra water and sun protection."
