Bartogay Reservoir: How to Get There
The Bartogay Reservoir sits on the Shelek River, about 170 km east of Almaty. Turquoise water, a concrete dam, bare steppe around it - striking, but far out.
Getting there
The road runs east along the Kuldja Tract, through Shelek and Kokpek, then turns off to the dam. The same road leads to the Assy Plateau and Black Charyn, so Bartogay is often done in one trip with Assy. Asphalt gives way to gravel, and the last stretch is rough for a regular car.
About passes: Bartogay is a reservoir, and near the dam itself there's sometimes security and limits on driving up to the hydro structure. The water and the viewpoints are open, but climbing onto the dam isn't a good idea.
Why electric enduro
It's far and long - our Bartogay tour runs a full day and is built for experienced riders (difficulty 5 of 10). Across steppe and gravel an electric enduro goes where a car bogs down, and the motor doesn't stall in the heat. We bring you and the bikes to the spot, then ride along the water and hills.
