Almaty Mountains: Where to Go for the Weekend
The Trans-Ili Alatau mountains are 20-40 minutes from Almaty. That's an unusual luxury for a city of nearly two million people. The challenge is making sense of the options: Kok-Zhailau vs Kok-Tobe, Asy vs Assy - some of these are the same place spelled differently, some are entirely different.
Here is a straightforward breakdown by difficulty and format.
For a First Visit: Medeu and Butakovka
If you've never been to the mountains near Almaty, start here. Medeu at 1,691 m is the most recognizable landmark in the city. Nearby: the anti-mudslide dam with a panoramic view of Almaty, and Butakovka waterfall 20 minutes further. No technical difficulty, works for any fitness level.
On our Medeu and Butakovka tour you cover both on an electric bike in about two hours of active riding. Difficulty: 1 out of 10.
For Beginners: Kok-Zhailau
A mountain upland at 2,100 m directly above Almaty. Hiking up takes 2.5 hours - half a day just for the climb. On an electric bike: 30-40 minutes, the rest of the time for views, a picnic, and kumis from a yurt.
The Kok-Zhailau tour is also difficulty 1 out of 10. Good for first-time riders.
For Those Wanting More: BAO
Big Almaty Lake at 2,511 m - turquoise water, views of Talgar Pass, the road closed to private cars. Our BAO tour is one of the most photogenic routes. Difficulty: 1 out of 10, beginner-friendly.
One note: swimming is not allowed - BAO is Almaty's drinking water supply. But we'll get you to the viewpoints.
For Adrenaline: Japanese Road
A narrow track cut into the cliffs above BAO by Japanese prisoners of war in the 1940s. Views over the Big Almaty Gorge, steep climbs, rock faces close on both sides. Not for first-time riders. The Japanese Road tour is difficulty 4 out of 10.
A Full Day Out of the City: Assy Plateau
A vast upland at 2,600 m in the Turgen Gorge: rolling green hills, yurts, herds of horses. Jeep convoys come here every weekend - riding the same hills on an electric bike is a different experience. We drive you and the bikes up by 4x4, then you ride the grass and trails. The Assy Plateau tour is a full day, difficulty 4 out of 10.
Two Days: Kaindy or Charyn
With a full weekend, two destinations stand out.
Lake Kaindy (350 km from Almaty) - a drowned forest, dead spruce trunks standing in turquoise water. The Kaindy tour is 70,000 KZT, difficulty 3 out of 10.
Charyn Canyon (200 km from Almaty) - the Valley of Castles looks like Mars. We drive you to the canyon by 4x4, you ride the canyon itself on a bike. The Charyn tour is 55,000 KZT, beginner-friendly.
For Experienced Riders: Kolsay Lakes
Two days, difficulty 9 out of 10. Not a sightseeing trip - mountain trails, river fords, overnight in camp. But you reach the Second Kolsay Lake without the crowds of hikers, and views that don't make it into standard photo sets. The Kolsay tour is for riders who already know what they're doing.
How to Choose

Some riding experience - Kaindy (3/10) or Charyn with a dramatic finish.
Want a real challenge - Assy (4/10), Japanese Road (4/10), Kolsay (9/10).

FAQ
Which route is best for a complete beginner? BAO or Kok-Zhailau - both difficulty 1 out of 10, designed for first-time riders. The difference: BAO is higher and further (2,511 m), Kok-Zhailau is closer and more urban.
Can you do a mountain day trip from Almaty and be back the same day? Yes, most routes are one-day. Kaindy and Kolsay need two days due to distance.
What is the best season for the Almaty mountains? May through October. July-August is peak season. September is the best month - fewer people, cleaner air. Spring (April-May) roads can be unstable after snowmelt.
What if the weather is bad? We reschedule in heavy rain or hail. In overcast conditions with light rain we usually go - mountain weather changes fast and that's normal. We confirm the day before.
