Big Almaty Lake (BAO): How to Get There
BAO sits at 2,511 meters - a turquoise lake ringed by peaks, about an hour from the city. The catch: getting there isn't simple anymore.
The road is closed to cars
Private cars can't drive up to BAO. The road is shut over its condition and mudslide risk, with no clear reopening date. That leaves three options.
Hiking from the pipe is about 15 km uphill, 4-6 hours one way. A taxi with a special pass is expensive and has to be arranged ahead. The third option is to ride up on an electric bike: no hike, no permit hunt.
Why we ride electric
Our Around BAO on Electric Bikes tour is built for exactly this.
The climb is a mountain switchback, and the motor handles it for you (the Arctic Leopard puts out up to 880 Nm), so you skip the 15 km on foot. An electric bike doesn't roar like a gas enduro - on the trail you hear birds and the river, not an exhaust. And it's a beginner route: difficulty 1 of 10, with a briefing before the start and a helmet, body armor and knee pads provided.
One rule: BAO is Almaty's drinking water source, so you can't approach the water or swim. But we'll take you to the best photo viewpoints, where the rangers won't bother you.
What to bring
At 2,500 meters it gets cool even in summer, especially when you stop moving - bring a light jacket. Sunscreen: UV is stronger at altitude than in the city. A couple of liters of water per person, a snack. Closed shoes - trainers are fine.
