Charyn Canyon: How to Get There from Almaty
Charyn Canyon is over 12 million years old, and the Valley of Castles looks less like Kazakhstan and more like Mars. It's a fair drive from Almaty: about 200 km, 3-4 hours one way.
How to get there
In your own car, the Kuldja Tract highway is fine, but the last 10 km before the canyon is a dirt road. A group bus tour is the cheapest option, but you're tied to a schedule and a group of forty. The third way is ours: we drive you to the canyon in a 4x4, and you ride the Valley of Castles itself on an electric bike.
Why an electric bike
On foot the Valley of Castles is about 3 km and an hour or so of walking, and in summer the canyon hits +40°C. On a bike you'll ride the whole thing and reach viewpoints few hikers get to. The bikes are electric (Arctic Leopard), so no roar and no exhaust. Gear, a guide and hotel transfer are on us.
What to bring
Even with us, bring sunscreen (SPF 50+), a hat, a couple of liters of water per person, and closed comfortable shoes. Spring and autumn are the best time to go: summer is hot, winter is bare.
FAQ

Do I need riding experience? No. The Valley of Castles is not technically demanding - flat dirt, gentle bends. We run a briefing for first-timers before the start. Minimum age is 14 years.
How long is the drive to the canyon? 3-4 hours from Almaty one way. This is a full-day tour: early morning departure, evening return.
What is the best season for Charyn Canyon? April-May and September-October. In summer the canyon hits +40°C in the shade - hot on a bike. Winter is scenic but we don't run bike tours then.
Is the transfer to the canyon included? Yes, fully. We take the whole group by 4x4 from Almaty to Charyn and back. No need to arrange your own vehicle.
How is this different from a regular bus tour? A bus tour drops you at a viewpoint for an hour and leaves. With us you ride the full length of the Valley of Castles on an electric bike - several kilometers along the canyon floor, viewpoints that most visitors never reach. And it's quiet: no exhaust, no engine roar.
