Overview
This trail was carved into the mountainside in the mid-20th century, and local history ties the work to Japanese internees held in Kazakhstan. It wraps gently around the slopes of Ile-Alatau National Park - no steep climbs, no rough off-road. The canopy keeps you cool, and the electric motor keeps things quiet enough to hear birds. Views open up over the gorges and down to Almaty. Good route for getting comfortable on the bike before trying anything harder. We finish at the top of the old water pipe with tea on the roof of the abandoned lift building. Experienced riders can take a harder, unusual descent toward the Kok-Zhailau trailhead; it is not for beginners.

- 30,000 KZT per person. Includes bike, guide, and full gear.
- Do I need riding experience?
- No. The route is rated 2 out of 10 and works for beginners: we teach you before the start and give you full gear. The hard descent toward Kok-Zhailau is not part of the standard tour and is only for experienced riders.
- Why is it called the Japanese Road?
- Local history ties the name to Japanese internees who worked in Kazakhstan after the Second World War, and to the hydroelectric cascade on the Big Almaty River. We found no archive document naming the builders of this particular road. The shelf is carved straight into the cliff in places.
- Minimum age?
- 14 years.
